The Old Trusty incubator was made by M.M. Johnson Co., Clay Center Nebraska. This example dates to around 1907. By 1911, Johnson had switched to galvanized metal cladding on all models. His three patents on the incubator date to 1903, 1904 and 1907. This early model is made of redwood. The two egg trays are present, as well as the patented copper hot water heating system. The cabinet is 28" wide, 22" deep and 29" high.
Included with the incubator is a 96 page book by M.M. Johnson beginning with the history of his company and a great deal of information on the use of incubators, in general. The book includes around 200 photos of various models of the incubators in use by customers all over the country. This is the ninth annual catalog of the Old Trusty Incubator & Brooder, printed in 1911. Most of the photos are of the newer galvanized metal jacketed models, but there are many photos of this earlier redwood model. I had kept this catalog for years rather than sell it separately, feeling that the incubator and book should be kept together, even though I did not find them together. The book is intact and in good condition, except for a large corner tear in the front cover.
The Tycos incubator hygrometer is described and illustrated in the Old Trusty catalog. Patented in 1891, it was made by Taylor Instrument Co. The hygrometer is in fine condition but requires a replacement wick.
