Improvement in Mechanical Movements

Patent granted to John Barnes and William F. Barnes, of Rockford, Illinois
May 9, 1871

This first Barnes patent concerning scroll saws covers a method for converting oscillating treadle motion into rotary motion of the balance wheel. A belt attached to the treadle and wrapped around a pulley causes the pulley to rotate alternately and a locking lever inside the driving pulley engages the flywheel causing it to turn continuously in one direction.
